Term 1 Week 3

I am planning on using this blog to document my artistic progression during my time at Gnomon. It will also serve to host a current portfolio and eventually a resume. Ive always been fascinated by art books that display not only finished illustrations but also the sketches and studies which led to these final pieces. I am going to attempt to apply the same concept to my assignments while at Gnomon.

For art history we were asked to create an interpretation of the protagonist from the Epic of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh is described slaying the Bull of Heaven and Humbaba an ogre guardian. I liked the idea a herculean man slaying mythical creatures for sport. I thought that perhaps in Gilgamesh's past he had encountered an arachnid creature.

Faced with defeat the creature had begged for mercy as it writhed on the ground. Gilgamesh, a man of extreme sensibility, set down the creatures leg he had been about to bludgeon it with and listened to its plea. A mutual agreement was reached and from then on the creature acted as living armor for the hero. Its rigid carapace elongating and thickening as the situation demanded.

I will continue to update this as the piece progresses.
